This section presents a step-by-step procedure for generating your PMDF configuration files using the command line PMDF automatic configuration utility, PMDF CONFIGURE MTA. Refer to Chapter 6 for a sample PMDF-MTA configuration dialogue.

• Configuration of PMDF should be done using the SYSTEM account to ensure that the necessary privileges are available to create the configuration files. If you are not logged in on SYSTEM, do so now.
  
• Begin the configuration procedure by invoking the PMDF CONFIGURE utility as follows:

  $ SET DEFAULT PMDF_TABLE:
  $ PMDF CONFIGURE MTA
  

  
  
• The configuration procedure will optionally print out detailed explanations of each prompt as it proceeds. Unless you are conversant with the procedure, enable the detailed output.
  
• The answers to all the questions are logged to a file in the PMDF_TABLE: directory. After the first configuration, PMDF CONFIGURE can use the answers to the previous run as the default answers. The utility will ask:

  Do you want to use answers from the previous run as defaults? 
  

  Answer YES, if you wish to have your previous answers presented as default answers. You may use the backslash character, \, to clear a default answer.
  
• Closely examine the example configuration presented in Chapter 6 . Parts of the sample site are probably representative of your own network configuration. In addition, the example was run with detailed prompting enabled, and will prepare you for the answers you need to provide for your own site.
  
• Once you're completed running the PMDF CONFIGURE utility, type out or print the PMDF_TABLE:pmdf.checklist file and complete the configuration by following the steps outlined in the checklist.
  
• If you have TCP/IP connectivity to other systems, you will need to configure the PMDF Dispatcher (which manages the PMDF SMTP server and other TCP/IP based services). Chapter 9 and Chapter 10 discuss this in detail. Note that if this is your initial configuration of PMDF, the PMDF CONFIGURE MTA utility will ask at the end of its other tasks whether you wish to invoke the PMDF CONFIGURE DISPATCHER procedure at that time. You may either answer YES and perform the Dispatcher configuration then and there, or else answer NO and then configure the Dispatcher as a separate step subsequently.
  
• If you have purchased and installed the optional PMDF-FAX, PMDF-LAN, PMDF-MB400, PMDF-MR, PMDF-X400, or PMDF-XGS gateways, you will need to run their configuration procedures after configuring PMDF with the PMDF CONFIGURE utility.
  
• Test out your configuration initially by sending mail to yourself or someone else on your local machine through PMDF. Although PMDF isn't really required to send mail locally, this is a good initial test. Using the VMS MAIL utility, send a message to an address of the form

  IN%username
  

  where username is a local username. PMDF should accept the message and deliver it very shortly.
  
• Once local messages work, you can proceed to sending messages off the system through your various networks. If messages do not seem to be getting out, use the QM utility to examine the PMDF message queues and see if the messages are stuck on your system. Examination of log files in the PMDF_LOG: directory may help isolate network delivery problems. See the chapter "Maintenance and Troubleshooting" in the PMDF System Manager's Guide for additional information on tracking PMDF delivery problems.
  
• If everything appears to be functional, and you have completed your configuration for the present, you may want to compile your configuration for increased performance. Use the PMDF CNBUILD utility. See the PMDF System Manager's Guide for more information.
